What is a claimable QR code? (And when static/dynamic codes aren’t enough)
A claimable QR code is a printed code that is not finished at print time. Someone — usually the customer, sometimes your operations team — claims ownership later and sets where scans should go. That is the short answer to “what is a claimable QR code?”
Static and dynamic codes are still essential. They are just not enough when each physical unit needs its own activation story after it leaves the factory.
Static codes: perfect until the URL moves
A static QR encodes the final payload in the pattern — a URL, Wi‑Fi string, or vCard. It works offline and never depends on your servers. It also cannot change. If packaging ships for a year and your product page URL changes in month two, every carton is wrong.
Dynamic codes: editable, but usually shared
A dynamic QR points at a short link you control. You can edit the destination without reprinting — ideal for posters and campaigns. Most dynamic setups still share one destination across every print of that code. That is great for a window cling; it is a poor fit when each bottle needs unique ownership.
When claimable codes are the missing layer
Claimable QR codes for products keep the printed pattern stable through production, then add an activation step. After claim, the owner configures the live destination. That makes claimable QR a customer activation tool for packaging, hang tags, and warranty cards.
Use claimable when you need unit-level identity. Use dynamic when you need one editable campaign destination. Use static when the content truly never changes.
Packaging and authenticity
Each unit can activate after purchase without baking a final URL into prepress months early.
Field configuration
Installers or retailers can claim codes on-site and point them at location-specific resources.
How Qristic implements claimable QR
Generate claimable codes in bulk, organize them in print batches, export press-ready files, and let customers complete claim after scan. Pair this post with the claimable product page and the retail print-batch guide when you brief packaging vendors.
FAQ
Is a claimable QR the same as a dynamic QR?
